Charter Hoteliers embody the values, behaviours and actions of a progressive hotel company. By signing the pledge, you have committed to: Drive environmentally sustainable businesses with a commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle, and champion the government’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2050.

This monthly newsletter will give you some insights on best practices as well as tips on how to understand your business’ impact, where to start to make changes, measure your emissions and much more. It is based on three years’ experience of putting sustainability at the forefront in our day-to-day operations at Whatley Manor Hotel & Spa in the Cotswolds.

Springboard becomes Hoteliers’ Charter Champion to support placements of trainee hotel professionals

Hospitality charity Springboard has pledged its support to the Hoteliers’ Charter and is one of the latest leading organisations to become a Charter Champion, supporting the placements of hotel trainees in industry positions.

Providing specialist careers advice and guidance to young people across the country, Springboard UK aims to promote careers in hospitality as a rewarding and worthwhile career path to futureproof the talent pipeline for hospitality and tourism.

Working together, Hoteliers’ Charter has supported the industry-leading charity in placing Springboard trainees in hotel roles over the last few months. Seven trainees have now secured jobs in Hoteliers’ Charter properties and supporting groups, including Park Plaza Westminster, Red Carnation Hotels, Firmdale Hotels, St Pancaras Hotel Group, Kings Park Hotel, and Holiday Inn London Kensington

On becoming a Charter Champion, Chris Gamm, chief executive of Springboard, said: “Springboard is delighted to become a Hotelier’s Charter champion. In order to attract the next generation of talent, it’s hugely important to show what a fantastic industry hospitality is, that we support, care for and develop our people, and it’s fantastic that more than 400 hotels have signed up to the commitments in the charter. We look forward to working together to place more Springboard trainees in roles at Charter Hotelier properties.”

Charter Champions support the aims and objectives of Hoteliers’ Charter by reaching out to their audiences and helping the organisation drive and evolve the work that underpins the 10 Charter commitments.

The Springboard Awards For Excellence Are Now Open For Entries!

Springboard and headline sponsor, Smart Group, are excited to announce that the Springboard Awards for Excellence are now open for entries.

Nominate yourself or another deserving business or individual for the Springboard Awards for Excellence!  Springboard want to recognise and celebrate the hospitality superstars, who have shown amazing resilience and innovation, managing to shine over the past year as the industry rebuilds.

Hospitality Rising: Join the movement

Hospitality Rising is a collaborative movement dedicated to creating the biggest hospitality recruitment advertising campaign the UK, and beyond, has ever seen. The organisation is a coalition of progressive businesses who are passionate about working together to attract new talent to the sector, while also shining a light on exemplar employers and raising the bar for employee experience across the industry. 

Spearheaded by a board of industry professionals, the aim of the campaign is two-fold: to change the perception of working in hospitality in the minds of the people of the UK, helping to increase the number of people considering working in hospitality from 1 in 5 to 2 in 5; and to increase the number of people recommending that other people have a job in hospitality from 2 in 5 to 3 in 5.  

While the movement has already secured £250k worth of donated creative support from the creative agency teams under the IPA10X initiative, the campaign, which is being supported by Google’s lead creative agency and The Army’s ex-lead recruitment strategist, aims to raise £5 million by the end of 2021 to fund the creation and placement of TV and social media advertising content. Following reaching the sponsorship figure at the end of the year, the campaign is currently planned to launch in Q2 of 2022. 

Industry operators, suppliers, investors, commercial sponsors and government are being encouraged to invest in the campaign to help support reach the £5 million target. Those who are keen to invest will be asked to donate £10 +20%VAT per employee (up to 5000 employees).

The Future of Hospitality

The hospitality industry needs to “self-improve, showcase the greatness and engage with the workforce to balance revenue and resource levels” were strong messages from The Future of Hospitality seminar at the Independent Hotel Show on Tuesday. 

Sally Beck, General Manager at The Royal Lancaster Hotel and pioneer of The Hoteliers’ Charter joined the panel with Julia Sibley from The Savoy Trust, Chris Gamm from Springboard and Sam Coulstock and Robert Richardson from the Institute of Hospitality to discuss how as hoteliers we all need to work together to raise the profile of the hospitality industry and promote the sector as a desirable, long term career path. 

“Sort your own house out.” Sally enthused. “If you want to keep your workforce you need to balance kindness with honest, transparent conversations. Reduce hours if needed – if you stretch the workforce they will leave.” 

The hospitality industry – along with a host of other industries post Brexit and the pandemic – has been hard hit by the recruitment crisis that is sweeping the nation. Stories of hotels and restaurants closing or reducing opening hours are rife, and the workforce is depleting even further as the ones left to hold the fort are too stretched and overworked. 

“We are hearing stories of apprentices in their third year leaving the industry due to the enormous strain they have been under since re-opening,” said Chris Gamm. “At this point, not enough young people are coming into the industry.”  

The panel went on to discuss how hospitality needs to self-improve and showcase that this is an exciting, thriving industry with a lot of positives. “We need to break down the barriers.” Sally explained. “The media celebrate bullying by chefs and portray our industry as long hours and poor pay. Our industry is amazing and vibrant, and every day is different.” 

And it is not all about rewarding through pay. Competitive salaries are key, as is being transparent about service charges. “But treat people as humans, not as a number on a spreadsheet.” Sally says. “There is so much more – mentoring, training, kindness and opportunities to grow. It is about the whole work environment.”  

This was the reason for the launch of The Hoteliers Charter in early 2021, providing a reckoning to hoteliers to break down this image. The 10 key principles – from driving environmentally sustainable businesses to advocating diversity, inclusion and equality – are a promise in kind that comes from the top. Only General Managers can sign up to the charter, to ensure full buy in. 

Springboard is also working hard to change the recruitment situation and has recently launched one of their biggest campaigns ever: Springboard into 2022. The campaign is heavily funded by The Savoy Educational Trust, whose £1million grant is being put to good use.  
 
“Our goal is to have 10,000 young people trained and ready to work in hospitality by 2022.” says Chris. The first milestone of 1000 people has already been reached, with Springboard providing hands on training to introduce unemployed people and those faced with barriers to get the skills needed for a career in hospitality.  

In addition, Hospitality Apprentice Week takes place between 18-22 October 2021, billed as an opportunity to celebrate apprenticeships in the sector and showcase the unique and diverse career pathways available by challenging misconceptions linked to careers in hospitality.  

Chris asked the audience for their support. “We need everyone’s help to educate and engage. Go to your local secondary schools, engage with the students, show them what our great industry can do for them.” 

The message is clear. It’s time we changed the perception. And we need everyone to get involved to make this happen. 

 

Embedding sustainability at our core

Sue Williams MI FIH is heading up the Hoteliers’ Charter’s new sustainability initiative as a Charter Board Member, along with her well-established network of sustainable and emission reducing experts.

Sue has submerged herself in the subject of sustainability since February 2019 and learnt by doing, and used lockdown to advance her knowledge by being the first UK hotelier to enrol on the Cambridge Institute of sustainable leaderships, short course on Business Transitioning to Net Zero Emissions.

To add further value to our Charter Hoteliers, we wanted to provide an additional focus to points 8, 9 and 10 of the Charter by sharing knowledge and best practice in these specific areas.

Point 8 reflects our need as a sector to drive the sustainability agenda to support the delivery of the UN’s directive to achieve Net Zero carbon emission in our businesses. A reduction of 50% by 2030 and on to 100% by 2050 is today’s target. This timeline is being reduced as we have already exhausted our Carbon Budget and our actions needing to be even more rapid. It has now become the most pressing subject of the decade.

The ninth commitment highlights our need to Advocate diversity, inclusion and equality, offering English lessons to colleagues where required and taking practical measures to make hotels accessible for all disabilities.

The final point is focused on bring sharp focus to the modern-day slavery Act 2015. It’s believed there is over 40 million people caught in slavery in one form or another in present day society. This will require deep collaboration with our supply chain.

When you embark on your properties sustainability journey you will need to create a strategy with a clear timeline and milestones, before embedding it deeply across your hotel.

This is without doubt this is a complex subject but we are no longer able to consider this optional in our operations. Soon it will be demanded of us all by Government and swiftly followed by Climate Change Levy’s (CCL) for those not complying.

COP26 (Conference Of Parties) is taking place in Glasgow, commencing 31 October 2021, at which there will be 100 world leaders expressly gathered to progress Climate Change actions in line with the United Nations directives. Post-COP we will all experience a step change in the drive to reduce emissions rapidly.

To help support our Charter members it is our intention for generate a broad range or “How to” fact sheets which we hope you will be able to utilise when you implement or further your sustainable strategies. With this supporting literature we aim to cut through the jargon and prevent challenges in our busy operations.
