Adrian Ellis to speak at Venues of Excellence Annual Conference

Hoteliers’ Charter board member and general manager of The Lowry, Adrian Ellis will share the benefits of joining the Hoteliers’ Charter at the Venues of Excellence Annual Conference, taking place at Edgbaston Park Hotel on Tuesday 15 March 2022. 

The theme for the 2022-focused event is “New Horizons” providing inspiration and confidence from an excellent range of industry speakers and sessions all focused on helping venues to return to business stronger, with an invigorated and fresh approach.

Adrian will share with attendees success stories from Charter Hoteliers, how the Charter is supporting hospitality businesses in building conscious and collaborative cultures and encouraging the next generation that roles and careers in hospitality are fruitful, supportive and beneficial.

Nominations for Acorn Awards now open

It’s time to reward the rising stars of the hospitality industry.


The Caterer’s Acorn Awards are back and are searching the UK for the very best indivduals under 30 as they pave their way in the industry. The sector has faced immense hardship over the last year and the awards aim to recognise the hard work and determination of those who have made a great contribution to its recovery after Covid-19.

Winning an Acorn Award formally recognises and rewards the impact the individual has had on their organisation and wider industry. 

Nominations close at 5:30pm on Friday 1 April 2022.

There are only three criteria. If you are nominating someone for an Acorn Award, they must work in the hospitality industry; be under the age of 30 on 29 May 2022 and be available for the winners’ weekend, which will take place at Rudding Park in Harrogate on 29 and 30 May 2022.

Springboard announces 2022 Awards for Excellence Shortlist

Springboard has announced the shortlist for the 2022 Springboard Awards for Excellence.

With over 120 submissions to 16 categories, over 40 businesses have made the shortlist. The Springboard Awards for Excellence champion those who have shown amazing resilience and innovation, managing to shine over the past year, as the industry rebuilds.

New categories for 2022, include Best Kickstart Employer, Disability Confidence Award and Best Practice Environmental, Social and Governance Integration. The categories showcase businesses and employees who have gone above and beyond, demonstrating the ability to implement new and successful initiatives to support their employees and communities.

Springboard CEO, Chris Gamm, says: The Springboard Awards for Excellence are about celebrating the businesses and individuals who do a brilliant job championing hospitality, developing our people, attracting talent and supporting Springboard’s mission to futureproof the talent pipeline.

Hoteliers’ Charter reaches 500-hotelier milestone

Hospitality Reimagined Hoteliers Charter

More than 500 UK hotels are now signed up to the Hoteliers’ Charter. Home Grown Hotels, Northcote, IHG Hotels and Iconic Luxury Hotels are among the Charter Hoteliers signed up to the organisation’s 10-point pledge.

Established in February 2021, the Hoteliers’ Charter exists to raise the profile of the hospitality industry and promote hospitality as a profession of choice to parents, schools, colleges, universities, and careers influencers.

Signing up to the Charter sees progressive hoteliers and businesses collectively make a commitment to providing a workplace environment built on the foundations of respect, fairness, equality, diversity and opportunity; and to placing colleagues’ wellness and career development at the heart of their operations. In addition, those signing up for the charter agree to support industry charities, drive environmentally sustainable businesses and advocate diversity, inclusion and equality. Once approved, Charter Hoteliers are also given access to the network area where they can connect with regional communities.  

On reaching this milestone Sally Beck FIH MI, general manager of the Royal Lancaster London and founder of the Hoteliers’ Charter, said: “Since its inception, the Hoteliers’ Charter has been working towards a more conscious, caring and collaborative industry to educate, inspire and sustain the next generation of talent. To have more than 500 Charter Hotelier’s working to support this goal is brilliant.”

Over the next 12 months Charter Hoteliers, Charter Champions, supporters and the industry-leading board members will continue to showcase the incredible opportunities hotels and the hospitality industry has to offer and anticipate getting to 1000+ hotels across the UK.

The Hoteliers’ Charter is championed by industry bodies and organisations such as UKHospitality, the Master Innholders, St Julian’s Scholars, Institute of Hospitality, PACE, AA, Springboard and Scottish Tourism Alliance.

The Annual Awards of Excellence (AAE) deadline approaching

The Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ 2022 Annual Awards of Excellence is open for entries.

Open to seriously talented
Chefs, Pastry Chefs or Waiters between 20 and 26 years of age, the Annual Awards of Excellence 2022 is a brilliant platform to shine a light on the young talent within our incredible industry and show support to our future generation of leaders. 

The top-scoring recipients of the AAE in each category will also be presented with the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts Young Chef, Young Pastry Chef and Young Waiter of the Year awards. Each year the Young Chef, Young Pastry Chef and Young Waiter of The Year are awarded a once in a lifetime scholarship trip.

Deadline for entries is 4 February.

Hotel Leadership Conference inspires hoteliers to be bolder, braver and better

More than 400 hoteliers and industry leaders came out in force to attend the 28th Hotel Leadership Conference, where they gained the impetus to make bolder, braver and better decisions for themselves and their businesses.    

The sell-out two-day conference, presented by The Master Innholders, took place at Park Plaza London Riverbank on 17-18 January where expert speakers covering a range of topics – from technology and asset management, to sustainability and diversity – inspired and educated delegates.    

Enhanced safety measures were introduced to allow the event to proceed in a secure way while delivering its aim of bringing the industry together when they needed it most.   

The first day concluded with a gala dinner, featuring a captivating Japanese-themed menu prepared by Park Plaza’s executive chef Werner Seebach, and celebrating the induction of 16 new Master Innholders.  

Generous purchases of tickets for the evening’s charity raffle raised an incredible £4,000 for the Master Innholders Charitable Trust, Hospitality Action, and Springboard.   

Team focus 

The conference programme, created by conference chair James B Clarke FIH MI, general manager Hilton London Bankside, opened with a motivational presentation by author and coach James Kerr who drew on the success of New Zealand’s rugby team the All Blacks to demonstrate how hoteliers can lead their own teams to success.   

Explaining how the team’s core values – humility, excellence and respect – were the backbone to their success, he challenged the industry to adopt them to bring out the best in their own people.   

The key to attracting and retaining employees – and therefore building successful teams – is to focus on diversity and inclusion, said Joanna Aunon, director of WiHTL, who urged the industry to prioritise inclusivity.   

This sentiment was echoed by Asif Sadiq, senior vice president at WarnerMedia for equity and inclusion, who pushed the narrative further, suggesting there were moral and business cases for encouraging a diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone felt they belonged.   

He said employers should make it give every member of their team a ‘sense of belonging’ to improve personal and business achievement.    

Sustainability NOW 

With consciousness around sustainability at an all-time high, there was a key focus on bolder responsibility with top tips shared by experts to guide hoteliers towards making changes.   

Ben Wielgus, head of sustainability at Informa, urged hoteliers to update their references to sustainability and remove the outdated term ‘corporate responsibility’ from all marketing materials as it no longer represented the status quo.  

He said customer expectations were changing with more of them willing to pay more for sustainable products, so now was the time to be brave, carry out a ‘top-to-tail review’ of their sustainable actions and implement new ones.  

Sustainability strategy adviser Sue Garrard told hoteliers that ignoring sustainability was not an option and warned them that inaction would lead to government taxation, potential staff shortages or revolts as well as accelerated global warming.  

“We have to remember that we can’t run a business on a dead planet,” she said.   

Garrard said adopting the long-term multi-stakeholder model for the business, engaging the whole workforce and understanding the customer would enable change to be enacted.   

The packed conference programme also included sessions on sales from Laughs Last founder Marcus Cauchi, technology from Florian Montag of apaleo and Edward Bracken of The Hoteliers’ Charter.   

To further support hoteliers for the year ahead, there were updates and forecasts from UKHospitality chief executive Kate Nicholls OBE and Sarah Duignan of STR while Tim Stoyle of Savills examined the key challenges and considerations hoteliers would need to make in asset management.  

 The event concluded with a rousing keynote from author and behaviourist Jez Rose who introduced hoteliers to his Seasonal Change Model and explored aspects of human behaviour before imploring delegates to embrace change and see its potential.  

Innovation and inspiration 

David Morgan-Hewitt FIH MI, chairman of The Master Innholders, said: “We in our industry have certainly learned how to adapt over the last two years.  Our industry is one of innovation, inspiration and true unadulterated hospitality and we should be proud of our success.
