Embedding sustainability at our core

Sue Williams MI FIH is heading up the Hoteliers’ Charter’s new sustainability initiative as a Charter Board Member, along with her well-established network of sustainable and emission reducing experts.

Sue has submerged herself in the subject of sustainability since February 2019 and learnt by doing, and used lockdown to advance her knowledge by being the first UK hotelier to enrol on the Cambridge Institute of sustainable leaderships, short course on Business Transitioning to Net Zero Emissions.

To add further value to our Charter Hoteliers, we wanted to provide an additional focus to points 8, 9 and 10 of the Charter by sharing knowledge and best practice in these specific areas.

Point 8 reflects our need as a sector to drive the sustainability agenda to support the delivery of the UN’s directive to achieve Net Zero carbon emission in our businesses. A reduction of 50% by 2030 and on to 100% by 2050 is today’s target. This timeline is being reduced as we have already exhausted our Carbon Budget and our actions needing to be even more rapid. It has now become the most pressing subject of the decade.

The ninth commitment highlights our need to Advocate diversity, inclusion and equality, offering English lessons to colleagues where required and taking practical measures to make hotels accessible for all disabilities.

The final point is focused on bring sharp focus to the modern-day slavery Act 2015. It’s believed there is over 40 million people caught in slavery in one form or another in present day society. This will require deep collaboration with our supply chain.

When you embark on your properties sustainability journey you will need to create a strategy with a clear timeline and milestones, before embedding it deeply across your hotel.

This is without doubt this is a complex subject but we are no longer able to consider this optional in our operations. Soon it will be demanded of us all by Government and swiftly followed by Climate Change Levy’s (CCL) for those not complying.

COP26 (Conference Of Parties) is taking place in Glasgow, commencing 31 October 2021, at which there will be 100 world leaders expressly gathered to progress Climate Change actions in line with the United Nations directives. Post-COP we will all experience a step change in the drive to reduce emissions rapidly.

To help support our Charter members it is our intention for generate a broad range or “How to” fact sheets which we hope you will be able to utilise when you implement or further your sustainable strategies. With this supporting literature we aim to cut through the jargon and prevent challenges in our busy operations.

More details will be shared in the coming weeks.

Educators Advisory Board Update from Adrian Ellis – July 2021

Following the establishment of the Hoteliers Charter’s Educators Advisory Board, which is made up of university and college representatives and industry professionals, meetings have been held to develop a dedicated action plan to work towards hospitality being seen as a career of choice for school-leavers.

Working in-line with the 10 commitments of the Hoteliers Charter, the Advisory Board aims to improve the image and reputation of the industry and are working hard to establish stronger connections between schools, colleges, universities, and the industry.

Activities and targets within the dedicated action plan includes:

  • Increase number of Charter Hoteliers

The organisation is working towards growing the number of Charter Hoteliers to 1,000 businesses, with each board member aiming to encourage at least two businesses to sign up per month, including hotels, universities or colleges.

  • Develop engaging hotel department-focused content

To highlight the range of roles and departments within Hotels, the Advisory board is seeking support and funding to cover the development of short videos covering Housekeeping, Front Office, Spa, F&B services, and other heart of house operations. Once produced the videos will be regularly used in career fairs and at educational establishments to raise the profile of opportunities available to students within hospitality businesses.

  • Create an awareness model

As an industry there is more we can do to improve the awareness and attractiveness of the industry to school leavers and their parents. The board aims to create a comprehensive awareness model that includes mentorship, parent and student visits, career hubs, competitions and career talks, which, once consolidated, can be rolled out to regional hotel associations and the schools within their area.

  • Standardise the university placement process

University placements are a great opportunity to build engagement with students looking to enter the industry, however, when these are poorly orchestrated, they can negatively influence the students’ experience. Moving forward, the board aims to standardise the placement procedure so that there is better consistency of delivery and clarity of expectations for the student and university alike. If placements can be uniformly well balanced and cover key areas with care, training and proper guidance as suggested in the Hoteliers Charter, then the industry stands a much better chance of retaining this potential talent.

Working with the Advisory Board, it is hoped that Charter Hoteliers will lead the way in providing the ‘model’ university placements and take the lead with the schools programme that is being developed. This will ensure that consistency of approach is being developed and will lead to the industry becoming a career of aspiration for schools and universities alike.

The Caterer’s Best Places to Work in Hospitality 2021

The Caterer

Hoteliers_Charter2021

The Caterer’s Best Places to Work in Hospitality 2021 awards the greatest employers in the hospitality industry, using feedback from those who really matter, their employees. Following a simple registration process, employers can distribute a survey, created in partnership with engagement consultancy Purple Cubed, to their team for their thoughts. Required response rate is determined on the size of your company, with 50% needed for 1-150 people,  40% needed for 151-1000 people, and 30% needed for over 1000, to show a true depiction of the organisation.

The survey is centred around five key questions, taking no longer than ten minutes to complete, and remain anonymous. This year will also focus on how employers have worked with their teams through the COVID-19 crisis. Feedback is provided to all companies who reach the minimum response threshold through a detailed report, which includes competitor comparisons, providing honest insights into teams’ attitudes and feelings towards the company and its HR practices.

Hospitality companies who then receive the highest scores are identified as one of the Top 30 Best Places to Work in Hospitality, which is published in The Caterer and on its website, boosting employer branding and assisting with recruitment and retainment. The top two employers from each size category are also invited to enter The Cateys’ ‘Best Employer’ award.

Deadline for registration is 16th April 2021 and surveys need to be completed and returned by 30th April 2021. Entering costs £250 + VAT.
